If you are like me, you may not know exactly what a “charter school” is… In fact, until I had the pleasure of meeting and befriending the owners of Self Development Charter School here in Las Sendas, Az I wasn’t real sure what to think of charter schools as a whole. So I did some research and basically you can define a charter school as:
Charter schools are public schools run by independent entities sponsored by a state-approved organization such as a state board of education, a state university, community college or local school district. The voluntary enrollment structure is intended to make charter schools more accountable for student achievement. As a result, charter schools are granted some level of autonomy and freedom from certain local and state regulations. Accordingly, charter schools may hire their own staff, develop their own curriculum and set their own educational programs and methods of operation under the oversight of the school board and authorizer/sponsor.
Which is really quite brilliant when you think about it… Imagine a tuition free school in which you can enroll your children so as to take advantage of greater educational opportunity! It’s really a quasi-private school which allows more autonomy in curriculum and lesson plan design. Students here are challenged and engaged on a much higher level that you would expect to see in your average public school. Active Learning: here its not just a phrase, its action. The teachers encourage and seek to develop self-motivated and self-directed learners, who set short and long-term goals. Tools like computers and technology are integrated with classroom topics and add value to each student’s experience.
Las Sendas Az area charter school shines!
That’s what Self Development Charter School here in the Las Sendas area is all about! Originally started as a preschool by founder Anjum Majeed in 1988, the school has now grown to more than 300 students who can continue their enrollment through the eighth grade.
Self Development Preparatory School has distinquished itself amid an era where education and educators are perhaps not as revered as the should be. Let’s see: SDCS received Arizona’s EXCELLING school ranking for six consecutive years. And, they just recently earned the Charter School Of The Year Award for 2010! How’s that for starters?
